Back-to-School Glam

Back. To. School. 

Depending on what roles you play in life, those three words strung together can either bring memories of childhood fun or anxiety of what's to come! If you're a parent, you may be excited to finally have routine back in your home. The kids aren't asking you what they can eat every 10 minutes. You don't have to come up with a ridiculous list of activities to keep them occupied, or camp/babysitter/visits to family to keep them cared for while you're working. If you're a teacher, like me, the commercials started far too early ("Hey. . . I JUST got into this summer thing! Shhhh!) and back-to-school marks the end of your leisure time. But then this wild thing happens and "teacher mode" kicks back in. You get excited to shop for you new classroom, eager to label ALL THE THINGS, and nervous about putting on real clothes again. *One of my absolute favorite things about summer is that "inappropriately" short shorts, tank tops, any other clothing that shows I'm a lady with lady parts become acceptable wear again. . .whenever I want. You have NO idea how difficult it is to dress oneself when thinking about being appropriate around 9-year olds when standing, sitting in a chair, sitting "criss-cross applesauce", out on recess duty with the "Warm Wind" blowing, and the thousands of other ways you haven't yet thought of that can lead to a wardrobe malfunction you aren't prepared to explain to the principal and students' parents. Yikes!*

With all of that going on, I feel a little overwhelmed, excited and slightly out of control. My only way of finding order and balance in that situation is to fall into makeup. Obviously! Back-to-school means one precious thing that will get me through: Back-to-School SHOPPING!

Yes, I picked up a few new outfits but that's not what we're here to talk about. Back-to-school means that we all get to decide the answer to my favorite question come late August, "Who do I want to be this year?"

It hits my intrinsic motivation to put makeup on every time I sit in front of my vanity. *Have you seen that thing? It is my happy place. I'll insert a picture and video link for you.*

My favorite thing about makeup is that you get to decide how you want to present yourself to the world and it can be different every single day, if you want! The beauty of that never ceases to astound me!

So, let's talk Back-to-School videos! I have prepared three new looks for you that will be coming out over the next week. Allow them to serve as inspiration as you work out who you want to be this year. The beginning of the school year is a fresh start. Maybe you've always thought yourself more glamorous than you typically portray. Own it and rock it this year! Maybe you are interested in softening up your look and sharing a more inviting aspect of your personality. Let's do it! Perhaps you want to be that mysterious being that everyone spends a month saying, "What did she do this summer? Something's different about her and I just can't put my finger on it. But man, she's fabulous!" I've got your back!

REVIEW: L'Oreal Paris La Palette Nude 2

Many drugstore beauty brands have gotten on the "Nude Palette" bandwagon and I have been keeping my eye on most of them. Thankfully, tons of YouTubers have been reviewing them, which has made the process of eliminations a lot easier! I used to work for L'Oreal Paris, so I'm familiar with the quality of their products. Overall, they have an incredible track record for putting out quality products at a fair price point. Not every product will work for every person, so it's important to keep that in mind.

I've had my eye on the La Palette Nude eyeshadow palettes for weeks now. I watched several videos and read various blog posts on these palettes and the most confusing part is how mixed the reviews are. It seems that the pigmentation differs between the shimmery and matte shades as well as between the La Palette Nude 1 and La Palette Nude 2. After a lot of debate, I decided to pick the La Palette Nude 2. I love that it had more plum and purple tones that would work best with my skintone. There's no need to wonder what my opinion is on this palette: my review is a rave! I LOVE THIS PALETTE!

One of the things I struggled with was the price. I've seen this palette priced anywhere from $15.00-$20.00. That's a significant amount of money to drop on one drugstore item, so let's break it down:

You get 10 eyeshadows in this palette. Four shimmery shades and six matte shades are included. The shimmery shades are more of a satin shimmer rather than glittery. The palette has a mirror included and a double-ended brush. (I tend to toss the applicators that come with drugstore palettes, so I can't speak about the quality of the brush.) The shadows have numbers instead of names, which I don't like. I just personally prefer when products have names because I find it easier to remember which is which when talking about them.

Number 7 is my favorite color to wear all over the eyelid and can be easily paired with a variety of other shadows to create a light and fresh makeup look such as this one:

Most of the shadows are buttery and smooth. They blend really nicely and are fairly pigmented. One of my favorite drugstore eyeshadow ranges is the L'Oreal Paris Infallible eyeshadows. The ones in the La Palette Nude 2 are pretty comparable, just barely falling short of meeting their pigmentation and only because they are pressed shadows. The only shadow I'm underwhelmed by is Number 5. It doesn't swatch very well and similarly does not show up too well on the eye.

Here's a very important point:

I ALWAYS use some type of eyeshadow primer under my powder eyeshadows. As you've seen in my videos, I typically use the MAC Paint Pot in Groundwork and it's the most important step in making sure my eyeshadow has a chance of lasting more than an hour on my oily eyelids. Eyeshadows will ALWAYS appear more pigmented if you use some type of primer underneath. I did not use a primer underneath the swatches on my arm, but absolutely did when putting them on my eyes. If you're finding that you are not getting the color pay off you're looking for with your eyeshadows, try some type of primer.

Final thoughts:

La Palette Nude 2 is a beautiful palette that can be used to create fresh daytime looks and smokey dramatic looks for night. Even at it's highest price point of $20.00 it breaks down to $2.00 per eyeshadow, which is quite affordable. *Check your newspaper for coupons!* I highly recommend you get your hands on this palette and start playing!

What to Wear for Spring & Summer

Spring and summer are my favorite times to explore lip color. Winter can leave my lips feeling dry and when that happens nothing looks good on them.  So after a little moisture and recovery I'm ready!  A little bit of sunshine is all it takes to get me digging through my lip color collection endlessly trying on different combinations. Figuring Out Your Makeup Routine

One of my favorite things about makeup is that it all washes off at the end of the day. You can transform yourself into whatever version of yourself you wish to be, never losing your natural self. Your features won't change because you decide to contour with powder, glue on some lashes, or swipe on some lipstick.

I don't remember a time when I had a "Makeup Routine." I've always worn whatever I felt in the mood for that very moment. From time to time I would happen upon a certain look that I loved and would repeat it maybe once before moving on to something else. But after that I'd go back to switching it up each day.

Last week I wore the same makeup look three days in a row! The only reason it wasn't four was because I didn't wear any makeup that fourth day. So, as I sit here, wearing the same makeup look again here's how to do it!

DIY Prom Makeup

Prom was a really great time. One of my favorite things was the preparation leading up to the prom. It's the closest thing to planning a wedding that you will do in your life prior to graduating high school. I remember for months leading up to it my mom and I would go out every weekend looking for the dress, shoes, and jewelry. We would look at different hairstyles and I would pore over magazines and Kevyn Aucoin makeup books testing out different makeup looks for The Big Day.

What great fun!

The one thing I was absolutely certain of was that I would do my own makeup. I still think when/if I get married I will probably do my own makeup then, as well. There's just something about trusting your own artistry and knowing what the end result will be that really appeals to me.

Get Ready for Spring

I am more than ready for Spring! Thanks to Daylight Saving Time providing our extra hour back, we currently have sunlight until about 7 pm.

7:00 PM!!!

What a wonder! I'm on my way to Washington DC soon and I'm expecting cherry blossoms, shopping, lots of coffee shop visits, and a visit to Baked & Wired for a Flap jack cupcake. You don't know about it? Words can try to describe, but I promise they do not do it justice! Yummy!

Rocking Bold Color

My recreation of the look

I don't often get to use big bold eye color and when I do there's this place inside my heart that says, "YES!!!!!!!!" I think color can be intimidating for many of us out there. No one wants to look "crazy" or unnatural. You have to have a lot of confidence to rock some major color like the women in this photo below. I was so inspired when I saw this that I knew I had to try to recreate the look. The filming of this video took over an hour! It was a combination of me being incredibly chatty and the look requiring a lot of steps. I did a fast forward for you so that you could simply "watch the magic happen."

If not, you ABSOLUTELY need to! It's so amazing. It is a story around Elena Gilbert a teenager living in Mystic Falls, VA. Her parents died in a car accident that she survived. She has a younger brother Jeremy and one day she meets Stefan Salvatore (a vampire!) and eventually meets his handsome (aka smoking hot!) brother Damon. Damon is a bit of a "bad boy", what with the lack of caring about human life. . . . or is he???

I won't say more, you have to watch it! It is currently in its 4th season, and you can watch it on the CW online here.

I'm no twin. . . but I'll makeup like one!

Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen are talented, gorgeous, and have a very distinct look. For my birthday makeup I'm looking for something special, a little sophisticated maybe, a little playful maybe. . . who knows! This is why I'm trying out several looks before the big day. It's your birthday?!?!

Not quite. . .

But it is about that time. Time to start trying out makeup looks, that is!

Here is my first of many trials for what will be on my face the night I turn 28! I'm also thinking about wearing past party dresses and revisiting former makeup looks, but we'll see about that.

For the cheeks:

• MAC Beauty Powder Blush in Feeling

For the lips:

• Maybelline Baby Lips lip balm in Quenched
• MAC lip pencil in Cork
• Estee Lauder Pure Color Crystal Lipstick in Crystal Rose
• MAC Plushglass in Fulfilled
