Back-to-School: Girl Next Door

I've officially been back at school for inservice (teacher prep and meetings before the students arrive next week) and I'm beat! Every single year I have this rush of adrenaline and excitement for starting a new year that carries me through the first 1-3 days. This time I petered out after 1.75 days. Done. Tired. Feeling like Lucille Ball from I Love Lucy after the umpteenth take of the Vitameatavegamin commercial. "Do you pop out at parties? Are you unpoopular?"

"Well. . . Are you?!"

All of this means that I have less time and energy for my beautiful bold red lip. Which takes me to the perfect fast and easy look: The Girl Next Door or as I like to call it, "The I Woke Up Like This. . .But I Didn't. . .But Man if I Could?!" This is the second makeup tutorial from my Back-to-School series and there are still two more videos to come! Comment below and let me know how your back-to-school is going.

Back-to-School Glam

Back. To. School.

Depending on what roles you play in life, those three words strung together can either bring memories of childhood fun or anxiety of what's to come! If you're a parent, you may be excited to finally have routine back in your home. The kids aren't asking you what they can eat every 10 minutes. You don't have to come up with a ridiculous list of activities to keep them occupied, or camp/babysitter/visits to family to keep them cared for while you're working. If you're a teacher, like me, the commercials started far too early ("Hey. . . I JUST got into this summer thing! Shhhh!) and back-to-school marks the end of your leisure time. But then this wild thing happens and "teacher mode" kicks back in. You get excited to shop for you new classroom, eager to label ALL THE THINGS, and nervous about putting on real clothes again. *One of my absolute favorite things about summer is that "inappropriately" short shorts, tank tops, any other clothing that shows I'm a lady with lady parts become acceptable wear again. . .whenever I want. You have NO idea how difficult it is to dress oneself when thinking about being appropriate around 9-year olds when standing, sitting in a chair, sitting "criss-cross applesauce", out on recess duty with the "Warm Wind" blowing, and the thousands of other ways you haven't yet thought of that can lead to a wardrobe malfunction you aren't prepared to explain to the principal and students' parents. Yikes!*

With all of that going on, I feel a little overwhelmed, excited and slightly out of control. My only way of finding order and balance in that situation is to fall into makeup. Obviously! Back-to-school means one precious thing that will get me through: Back-to-School SHOPPING!

Yes, I picked up a few new outfits but that's not what we're here to talk about. Back-to-school means that we all get to decide the answer to my favorite question come late August, "Who do I want to be this year?"

It hits my intrinsic motivation to put makeup on every time I sit in front of my vanity. *Have you seen that thing? It is my happy place. I'll insert a picture and video link for you.*

My favorite thing about makeup is that you get to decide how you want to present yourself to the world and it can be different every single day, if you want! The beauty of that never ceases to astound me!

So, let's talk Back-to-School videos! I have prepared three new looks for you that will be coming out over the next week. Allow them to serve as inspiration as you work out who you want to be this year. The beginning of the school year is a fresh start. Maybe you've always thought yourself more glamorous than you typically portray. Own it and rock it this year! Maybe you are interested in softening up your look and sharing a more inviting aspect of your personality. Let's do it! Perhaps you want to be that mysterious being that everyone spends a month saying, "What did she do this summer? Something's different about her and I just can't put my finger on it. But man, she's fabulous!" I've got your back!

Today we're starting with GLAM! What are your favorite back-to-school memories or essentials? Comment below and let's chat!

Anastasia Beverly Hills: Modern Renaissance Eyeshadow Palette Review

Eyeshadow palettes are everywhere you look lately. So many new product launches from makeup companies include a new "Must Have" palette and quite frankly it leaves me a bit confused! Those of us who are on a budget (trying to be) need to be really decisive about which items we splurge and save on. I had ZERO intention of buying the Anastasia Beverly Hills Modern Renaissance Palette. . . and then I touched it.

WHAT?!?!

I had no idea! That palette is EVERYTHING! Splurge, baby, splurge!

Here are the basic details:

  • 14 shades
  • A mix of ultra-matte, satin, and metallic finishes
  • Neutral and berry tones
  • Cost: $42

In the video I talk about how I came across this beauty in the first place, and also share a sneak at a tutorial that will be coming up soon! Basically, I would grab this baby in a heartbeat! The only thing I didn't mention is that the shadows are really soft and can create some fall out if you don't tap your brush before applying and blending. Other than that, I call this a WIN!

Sometimes I sit at my makeup vanity *squeal* and open up the drawers thinking, "What shall I put on my face today?" It is hands down one of my favorite things about the morning. I love pulling out the products and figuring out what "look" I'm going to wear that day.

I love to experiment and try different makeup looks completely based on my mood and how I feel. However, some classic looks just don't go out of style!

What Is a Full Face of Makeup?

That really is the question! Everyone has different standards for what they would call a "full face of makeup." In my opinion, there are degrees of fullness.

If I put makeup on every feature of my face, that can be considered a full face.

If I put on lashes, that's extra full.

If I contoured and highlighted and put on lashes, that's REALLY full!

And it doesn't stop there! "It doesn't???" some of you may ask. And here's the truth: with makeup you can do as much or as little as you want. There are NO rules! It's really complete freedom!

Did you ever think of it that way before? You can look however you want and be whomever you please. And today, this is me:

2016: New Year, No Resolutions

Why can't we resolve to be our best selves every single day when we wake up in the morning? I'm not going to make any resolutions, but I am going to post a new makeup tutorial for you! Enjoy!

Weekend Vlogs

Let's do this. Let's talk vlogging.

Making beauty videos is definitely more of a controlled environment type of thing because I sit stationary, make a decision about what I want to show/teach you, and there is a clear start and end. When it came to vlogging I found myself unsure about what to film. How do I know if my daily life is interesting or boring to my viewers? What are my personal boundaries about what I do and don't want you to see? How do I give you an opportunity to get to know me better without seeming guarded or rehearsed? I decided that because I watch a lot of vlogs I should use them as research in trying to figure out what I should vlog about myself.

Vlogging is a very different thing. It definitely puts me in a much more vulnerable state. I didn't think I cared what others thought about me until suddenly I was sitting in my car holding my camera up and looking left to right to see if anyone was watching. Why was I so freaked out?

Sometimes fears that are lying underneath the surface come creeping right up when you least expect them. It's awkward talking to a camera with other people around. But I'm ready to face that fear! *I hope. . .

Enough of that blabbing because I am preparing for Vlogmas and am so excited to vlog every day for you all. As promised, I have a filmed a weekend vlog for you. Let me know if you like them and if all goes well through Vlogmas, maybe weekend vlogs will become a regular thing. Enjoy!

BIG ANNOUNCEMENT!!!

For many of you who watch YouTube on a regular basis (points to herself) you will know how exciting your Subscription box gets come December 1st. Those of you who are not avid YouTube watchers are probably wondering what I am talking about. I'll tell you. . .

VLOGMAS!!!

Vlogmas is that special time of year when some YouTubers who vlog (film themselves throughout their day) make the 25 day commitment to vlog every day in December leading up to Christmas. And guess who is doing Vlogmas this year. . .

ME!

I know, I know. You're probably thinking, "She doesn't do daily or weekly vlogs now! How is she just going to up and begin vlogging for Vlogmas?"

I'll tell you. I am going to practice vlogging for the next couple weeks and post those first 2-3 videos for you in preparation for the big show. I still haven't worked out if I will upload everyday, every few days, or each week, but I will vlog every single day of December. Those of you who are planning on seeing me in December, you should get ready right now for the possibility of seeing me walking around holding a camera up in public places. And if you don't want to be in the vlog, no problem! I'll make sure to ask you first.

I hope you're as excited as I am.

Christmas is coming! I know, I know. Let's do Thanksgiving first.

Thanksgiving is coming!  :)

P.S. Here are a few videos you may have missed that can keep you busy in the meantime.

Fall Makeup

If you aren't totally into the whole dark lips equals fall makeup thing. . .you're in good company! Dark lips are not my favorite thing, but I would rock a red lip just about any day of the week. Enjoy my latest video featuring smokey eyes (LOVE!) and red lips.

Lazy Days Are Rarely Anything But

I've always been a bit of a homebody, and during the year a day off from work is my favorite excuse to lay around at home ALL DAY LONG. My favorite activities include:

  • Watching TV
  • Watching movies
  • Cooking yummy food
  • Ordering take out
  • Painting my nails
  • Writing blog posts
  • Brainstorming video ideas
  • Filming YouTube videos
  • Reading books
Now that I think about it, looking at that list makes me feel slightly tired. I've found that a day off tends to turn into, "How many things can I get done here at home before the sun goes down and it's "acceptable" to sit on the couch and watch primetime TV shows?"

This past week I've barely left home and I'm positively EXHAUSTED from all the work I've done! If you follow me on Snapchat or Twitter, you know that I have been trying to clean my closet for weeks. I've finally done it. . .along with every other area of my home.

Bedroom? Check!
Living room? Check!
Closet? Check!
Bathroom? Check!
Kitchen? Check!

How exciting! And how exhausting! Unfortunately that means I've fallen quite behind on my blog posting and video uploading. Sorry!

Well, here's a new post AND a new video for you! By the way. . .how is it August already???

Easy Summer Makeup

Don't we all need some easy makeup nowadays? Even in the summer, when the days are longer and everything feels possible with a little bit of sunshine, not many of us want to spend a lot of time on our makeup. Especially when it will probably melt off our faces within ten minutes. I have a quick and easy makeup look for you that I posted on YouTube last week. Enjoy!

Purple Smokey Eyes

Purple is my favorite color. I've been a purple fan since I was a little girl, but strangely enough, I did not gravitate to the color in makeup when I first started out. I used to love purple in packaging, and still do, but mostly I loved turquoise and bronze, magenta, and olive green.

The first time I tried purple eyeshadow I was BLOWN AWAY by how gorgeous it was! Here's the thing: purple looks great on brown eyes! It also, looks beautiful on darker skin.

So. . .if you're ready to try some purple eyeshadow, give this little tutorial a watch!

Cranberry & Green: GORGEOUS On The Eyes

I was scrolling through my Instagram to see what makeup looks I had posted recently and came across one I was really excited about! "That's so cool!" I thought as I admired the combination of cranberry lids with moss green in the inner corner of my eyes. Add in a little smokiness around the outer corner and I was sold! I would definitely need to recreate that look on my YouTube channel.

I gave a little more color to the lip to brighten things up for summer and voila: a new makeup tutorial for you! Enjoy!
